The Laboratory of Feed and Food Quality was created in 2021, having previously functioned as a component of the Laboratory of Chemistry and Physiology of Nutrition. Our mission is to generate sustainable innovation in the field of feed and animal-derived foods by exploring nature’s potential to enhance quality of life. Through the intelligent integration of multiple disciplines, we develop and disseminate knowledge on the physicochemical properties of both plant-based raw materials and animal products obtained from livestock whose diets are supplemented in a controlled manner with specific feed additives. We are also expanding our analytical portfolio to enable a deeper understanding of nutritional effects. The laboratory’s research promotes „green” nutritional alternatives that contribute to the production of sustainable yet profitable foods for farmers.
Through the research projects and experimental development contracts we undertake, we conduct research and development activities that span the full spectrum from concept to industrial-scale testing, including all intermediate stages—laboratory level and pilot scale. Our research is strongly oriented toward applied outcomes, aiming to deliver practical solutions that can be implemented in real-world settings.
The laboratory staff includes 6 scientific researchers (4 researchers are under the age of 35), with an average age of 36 (as of 2025), and 6 laboratory technicians.
The laboratory’s achievements include over 60 scientific publications, more than 40 of which are indexed in ISI databases (with over 60% ranked in Q1 or Q2 journals); 8 ongoing research projects; 11 developed feed products; several patent applications; one published patent; awards received at innovation and invention fairs.
The laboratory is equipped with facilities for determining proximate composition, mineral content, fatty acid profiles, fat-soluble vitamins, xanthophylls, antioxidant capacity, and polyphenol content. Available analytical equipment includes HPLC, GC, AAS, spectrophotometers, and other specialized instruments for advanced chemical analysis.
With respect for the environment, we implement innovative solutions based on the principles of the 3Rs – reducing waste, responsible recycling, and intelligent reuse of agri-food by-products – transforming them into sustainable opportunities for a greener future.
- We investigate the role of nutrition in mitigating oxidative processes, both at the tissue level and within food matrices, by studying oxidative modifications of lipids and proteins.
- We assess the potential of certain essential minerals and vitamins to enhance the oxidative stability of lipid matrices of animal origin.
- We develop concepts, nutritional and technological solutions for producing animal-based foods (meat, eggs, milk) with functional properties, obtained through targeted nutritional strategies aimed at the prevention of specific health conditions.
- We evaluate the bioefficacy of selected feed additives through laboratory-scale experiments. We also work on improving the bioaccessibility and stability of bioactive compounds from underutilized plant sources and agri-food industry by-products, using advanced analytical methods.
- We conduct in vitro studies to investigate the ability of selected plant resources to neutralize free radicals through the application of advanced in vitro analytical techniques. Additionally, we assess the potential of phytoaditives to combat the effects of lipid peroxidation induced in vitro.
- Additionally, we specialize in the development, optimization, and adaptation of robust analytical methods for the accurate detection and quantification of bioactive compounds in raw materials, animal feed, and food products, supporting quality assurance and innovation in the agro-food industry.
